My two sisters and I own a condo, lived in by our handicapped sister and her caregivers. For six weeks the issue regarding a non-working furnace and breaker problem was not corrected.

Service persons came, did little examination and left - NO results or no written estimate. After six weeks of wishy-washy interchanges between customer and manager of condo with AMERICAN HOME SHIELD, NO results and NO heat. My husband and I vowed to resolve, and we have. It has been COLD here and three persons were greatly affected.

This company is NOT RELIABLE. Please DO NOT USE THIS SHIFTY PLAN.

IT IS NO GOOD. NO INTEGRITY AND NO RESOLVE.

The delay tactic worked in order for the contractor to avoid spending their own money on the furnace issue. Sorry your sister was caught in the middle in the cold, but that is a result of the home warranty shell game.

The game goes like this: send a tech and delay; recall; send another tech and another delay; order a part and delay; part is wrong—another delay; act confused; start another ticket with another provider and delay; order goes back to original contractor, and you start over. Nothing is ever left in writing by the crafty contractors, so that they can squirm out of what they said last time out. They can walk their story back if nothing is in writing. Does this sound familiar?

All a home warranty is good for us taking your money and causing frustration, because the contractor gets paid very little whether they fix it or not—the definition of “coverage” is not what you think. The contractor has to pay for the repair, parts, new furnace, whatever is needed. Contractors get the same small amount (your service fee) and the rest is up to them to pay for. They keep holding out on the expensive items.
