Took 3 service fees of $75 in Feb 2019-Still waiting on refund | American Home Shield review

3.2
Details
A Feb 2019 service call resulted in AHS taking three $75 fees from my checking account. One is valid and two in error. They refunded one of the erroneous deductions at the end of Feb. Here it is June and MANY emails to them about the last refund they owe me and still waiting. They also make it next to impossible to find email addresses or phone numbers for management personnel so that you can escalate your issue to a higher level. I only had one because of an issue a couple of years ago.

The techs ARE competent, they are paid your service fee only to protect AHS from having to spending any money, thru any means they can come up with—even spending their own money if they have to, and not charging AHS a dime. Of course, they don’t want to work for free and provide the parts and new equipment, but in MANY cases that’s exactly what happens.

You see, AHS and all warranties, monitor what each contractor is billing them per claim, on average. That average is unacceptable if it is over about $200 on HVAC work—regardless of what failures the customers have or what work the contractor performed. The vendors have AHS Contractor Relations Representative to answer to about average costs every single month. Like a sales manager, only in reverse.

They aren’t asking how much did you sell? They are looking at how did you charge AhS. They’ll look at it like, “we sent you 82 HVAC calls last month, and you charged AHs $18,450 for those 82 calls. That averages out to $225 per claim, spent by AHS (keep in mind the service fees the customers pay amounts to $8200 that did NOT come from AHs but rather the customer.

So really AHS only paid $10,250 for 82 completed service calls with one vendor. The contractor relations rep will cal and go over the numbers and fuss at the vendor to get that average lower somehow , anyhow, because they want it always lower. That means fixing things at an even bigger loss, or finding more creative inflated ways to charge the homeowners. Ahs will give the job to someone else if the contractor can’t make it happen and keep the complaints low.

People complain when they smell a rat and feel like they’re being lied to. But what would you say if they told you the truth? “Look man, my numbers are coming in and I’m all over the maximum average cost per call. So I’m not going to be able to buy you a new motor with my own money this month—so I’m going to lie and tell them your unit was damaged by kids playing on it and that’s what messed up the fan motor.

It’s all about the numbers! The vendors usually don’t leave any paperwork trace about the diagnosis, and since service fees are paid straight thru Ahs now, there is no need for a receipt from the contractor., since it was paid online or by phone. No paper trail gives the tech room to fudge and not go down in print definitively what the failure and cause is.

He has to check your coverage to make a denia situation make since. They don’t like to screw over local neighbors but what can they do?

The company did eventually get back to me after a letter. I had also, temporarily, held up payment by BofA on my monthly fee.

They paid in full for the work done by the plumber I personally hired ($156). I was still liable for the $100 they would have charged had their own plumber done the job, although I have no problem with that.

All things considered I would give AHS a B-. They did eventually respond; they did refund my extra costs; but it took long and took too much of my time writing letters, contacting BofA etc.
