Long story short, they had no contractors in my area for the one repair (for a refrigerator) I ever needed. It should be illegal to have the customer service they did. I had to call multiple times, and each time spent an hour or more (no exaggeration) waiting to talk to someone. They would say that it was going to be set up, no one would call to do the repair, then I'd have to call AHS back and again wait on hold. When I finally went to cancel they charged me 53.29 for an "administrative fee". I had paid for the service for 3 years.

Trying to have a 15-year-old refrigerator repaired or replaced was a nightmare. Wrong diagnostics, wrong technical troubleshooting ability and poor customer service ( except "hello", "thank you", "I understand", "we will call you back" etc.

We needed a part for our electric range. It was back ordered. The only status we got was a phone call in unintelligible English at 4:30 in the morning. When we called to get status we were told we'd get a call within 48 hours. 3 days latter still no call. Called again and just got a run around. Kept being switched from one department to another. Each time had to repeat the order number, name, address etc. Seemed like a ploy to frustrate us. Finally decided to just cancel. Still took another 1/2 hour and repeated threats. Some people have had good experiences with this company. We did not. NEVER again.

Problem with contractor - American Home Shield review
I requested a call 20 minutes before the contractor arrival to my home. However they contacted me 3 minutes after arrival and were gone 3 minutes later. Additionally when I called the company they were rude and said the arrival text was just a courtesy and I would have to wait another week for them to return. Absolutely ridiculous! Additionally I have a Ring doorbell and the serviceman was intentionally avoiding the camera, which did not provide a good feeling about allowing him in our house.

Why not contact the office of the contractor and ask for an updated ETA so that you don’t miss your scheduled visit? Those automated notifications are just a courtesy, and if you have a scheduled service appointment, it is your responsibility to provide access.

It is not their responsibility to wait for you.

Home warranty customers are such a pain. For some reason non-home warranty customers are easier to work with.

They have unqualified repair people that ask you to pay additional fees for the job covered by the home warranty. If you don't agree this outfit marks the job as completed. No real warranty of any sort. Dealing with them has cost me $3000 in one case where their...

Service contractor canceled twice, stating weather. Apparently, they can't work if the road is wet. Deplorable customer service. They don't understand anything that is not on their script. No way of contacting anyone in the US.

The service companies only get paid for the first trip to your home. If the weather interferes with the diagnosis, or the repair, the repair company has to return at their own expense.

If the work is either HVAC-related, or Main line plumbing stoppages, for example, there is not much that can be done in the rain. It is not safe to work in the rain on these items, and just because your fixture or thermostat is indoors does not make it economically feasible for the service company to make 2 trips. They would have to repeat the entire day the following day, but without the ability to charge AHS for 2 trips. It is safer and more economically productive to make one trip.

It isn’t worth having employees out risking the company truck and liability in the rain to make no money, just to see what is going on at your house. Maybe if you didn’t use a warranty to get repairs, however, you would find that the price differential entices better contractors who are more willing to risk it. But home warranties only pay their contractors a small flat fee and they have to perform a high volume of work orders to make up for it. You will get very little personal consideration or attention, and the timeframe is not up to you.

Choose a local small business licensed professional and don’t go through a home warranty.

You will be much happier with everything, except maybe the price. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Yes, you are much better off without a home warranty! There is no money for the contractors who also fall victim to the abuse of home warranty companies.

It’s a scam all the way around. The reason the contractors stay is that once they start working with AHS, they can’t quit, and stay in business. There aren’t enough high quality customers to sustain the home repair trades, and honestly, would you rate yourself a “high quality customer”? What defines a high quality customer?

Ability to pay what it costs in 2020 US dollars (this is not 1975 or 2008) to have a professional, reputatable, fully licensed and insured tradesperson for your service; willingness and ability to reason about whether it is time to replace an appliance or make major financial decisions; understanding that business models in America require a profit to be made or else they should apply to become a tax-free charitable organization, and work off donations, like a church; understanding that small businesses are just that: SMALL, which means there aren’t numerous techs and support personnel to handle your problem with their undivided attention until you reach the point of satisfaction; i.e.

you aren’t the most important person in the world and your outside fridge should be sufficient until you decide what you’d like to do with the old one—holiday or not. Most complaints come from customers who have never owned a small business, or are used to working for the government in some capacity (where profit doesn’t exist and is not desirable or even legal), or don’t work at all, yet have a sense of entitlement.

Yes they are a bunch of scam artists alright and think with a contract like that they are doing it legally. This company (and most of them) need to get out of this business as they are true scam artists.
