First, be aware that American Home Shield only pays $10 per pound of freon which runs anywhere from $70 to $100 per pound when purchased from the contractors that they send out. Second, they will claim that the damage to the unit is secondary or incidental and use that...

Very valid points made here. As an HVAC contractor, these are 2 of the many ways in which AHS is “shielded” from having to pay out money on behalf of their policyholders.

There are other tactics, but these are 2 of the most common. Customers can not provide their own freon, nor have their own company come and install the freon. The contractor will not RE-use the same freon that was captured from the system (would you re-use motor oil when changing an oil filter in a car?) The refrigerant coverage provided of $10 per pound was brilliant on AHS’s part, to slow down the repair process and make the homeowner strongly consider a cashout and replace their own system. It allows the contractor to recoup some of the losses that occur daily for those that service home warranty customers.

The HVAC contractor Loses money on most of the repair work they do for AHS, but they accept the loss in exchange for a high volume of low dollar requests. Remember, the contractor charges AHS even when there is a claim denial or the homeowner misses the appointment. The contractor strives to find a way to wiggle out of doing actual work or providing expensive parts.

Since you know AHS is a scam, why are you using them? The only way to stop them is for everyone to cancel their contracts.

STAY AWAY!!! I've had multiple homes previously with AHS and had good experiences, not now!!! Whether pool, electrical, or any other service, AHS constantly looks for ways not to cover, claiming "not caused by normal wear and tear." Example: I paid for additional...

These home warranties mislead the customers into thinking “coverage” equals care. The coverage is actually provided by the service contractors at their own expense, and only when a denial is not applicable.

You see, the service fee that is paid by the customer, “covers” what is going to get done. If the service company charges AHS more than the service fee, it puts the service company in jeopardy of losing future business from AHS. All AHS wants to pay is the customer’s deductible. If work must be completed, it is at the contractor’s expense.

If the contractor doesn’t understand that, he will be replaced quickly. Make sense?

Stop wasting your money and cancel the credit card they are using to charge you the premium. They won’t let you go easily if you should try to cancel them.

They will charge you for several more months, at minimum. As for your broken appliance and pool—the repair people aren’t getting paid, even if AHs says something is “covered”. All “covered” means is that the contractor has to find a cheap solution, and time is of no relevance. The contractor will be footing the bill without reimbursement, even in the case of an item replacement, so don’t expect anyone to get in a hurry.

AHS holds their contractors to an average cost per claim that is too low to do anything but a diagnostic. Then in order to get more orders from AHS, they must include the new items, or parts and labor on repairs. These contractors don’t even try to get retail business, because servicing home warranties absolutely wrecks their reputations, and they have no time leftover for customers of their own. That is how AHS strangles these businesses to death, but there are always more coming along, willing to give it a try.

They all enter the home warranty arena thinking they will change the world and do a good, honest job. But home warranty companies are brutal, and show no mercy on their contractors or their customers. It’s all about the lowest average cost per call. When customers figure that out, and stop buying their worthless policies, they might change.

Until then, why would they or should they spend money they don’t have to? They can replace contractors more often than they have to replace equipment!

Add up the total cost of your monthly payments to AHS over these past years plus any deductibles, etc. you had to pay.

You should come to the conclusion that you have wasted alot of money over the years.

Put some money aside each month, say the AHS payment you would pay and then when/if you have a problem that needs fixing, pay for it with the saved money---plus, you can pick your own local company to do the repairs instead of who-knows-who AHS would send. These warranty plans are really a waste of money.

We were given this warranty at closing. I called them 4 different times to verify we were covered prior to setting an appt to look at an auxiliary ac unit. They charged me 75.00, after 2 days I finally spoke with the tech, he comes out and says the auxiliary unit is not covered and couldn’t look at it. These people refuse to give me back the 75.00 even though I attempted four times to verify. You can never get anyone who speaks and understands clearly any English. That’s half the problem. The other half is they just want your money. I. Nacelles my contract and got a new one with a more reputation company. Be aware of these people!!!
