First, be aware that American Home Shield only pays $10 per pound of freon which runs anywhere from $70 to $100 per pound when purchased from the contractors that they send out. Second, they will claim that the damage to the unit is secondary or incidental and use that...

Very valid points made here. As an HVAC contractor, these are 2 of the many ways in which AHS is “shielded” from having to pay out money on behalf of their policyholders.

There are other tactics, but these are 2 of the most common. Customers can not provide their own freon, nor have their own company come and install the freon. The contractor will not RE-use the same freon that was captured from the system (would you re-use motor oil when changing an oil filter in a car?) The refrigerant coverage provided of $10 per pound was brilliant on AHS’s part, to slow down the repair process and make the homeowner strongly consider a cashout and replace their own system. It allows the contractor to recoup some of the losses that occur daily for those that service home warranty customers.

The HVAC contractor Loses money on most of the repair work they do for AHS, but they accept the loss in exchange for a high volume of low dollar requests. Remember, the contractor charges AHS even when there is a claim denial or the homeowner misses the appointment. The contractor strives to find a way to wiggle out of doing actual work or providing expensive parts.

Since you know AHS is a scam, why are you using them? The only way to stop them is for everyone to cancel their contracts.

I know you don’t want to hear this from a home warranty contractor (and ALL home warranty companies are the same—Old Republic, for example, is even worse), but here goes: There is no money being paid to the repairman’s company except the service fee you paid. It is paid based upon the first trip out, not subsequent trips.

The repairman has to operate at a LOSS, doing their work for a flat $100 (while supplying the parts, too) in order to get more calls from AHS. No more money changes hands later. That’s it. Denials of claims are used by the contractor as much as possible to avoid going down the repair road, in which everyone is unhappy with too, because of the time it takes.

Better to get the unhappiness started immediately with an outright denial, than to listen to al the griping for a month, and still having to lose money. This is why ALL the contractors who work for home warranty companies have rotten reviews, and can’t make it in the retail market. They become slaves of the home warranty companies. They are abused.

Yet realtors push these plans and think they’re golden. The reason I’m explaining all this (in vain) is that the plans are not worth what is paid for them, and it’s best to hire (and not abuse) the local blue collar tradespeople, and stop using these bs home warranties. You can’t make them pay the contractors more than the flat rate (and why would they?) They punish the contractors that charge more by taking them off the list, and letting them go, where they will fail, will all the bad reviews earned from working with home warranty people. Realtors need to know this most of all.

When you exert pressure on the home warranty company, it only hurts the contractor more, not AHS, which is where the problem is: THE CONTRACTORS ARE NOT GETTING PAID.

AHS IS KEEPING ALL THE MONEY. Is that clear?

American Home Shield review: FAKE CONTRACT

Got notice in mail a number of months ago - called in to inquire. Elected NOT to sign up. Got a bill for a "contract" ($706.07) in November. Felt like identity theft/a scam. Called in. Rep was advised I never ordered a warranty. First rep wanted me to give her my information. Apart from "account number" and name, I said no. Second rep told me what she had and cancelled contract. Waiting on e-mail. It sounds like someone tried to meet their sell quota with me.

The customer is supposed to do THEIR job and check out these warranty companies—when will people learn that the BBB is about money, memberships, and extortion? If you had consulted this PissedConsumer complaint site before you became an actual PissedConsumer, you might have saved yourself some angst.

Regardless of the empty promises that an insurance company (or any business) makes while trying to take your money, careful consideration and research should be performed before believing what sounds too good to be true. Why, after the first incident back in the summer, did you place a second claim with them? Obviously, you saved money on the first using the warranty, even if you didn’t care for the slow service and rude customer relations. Perhaps you can find low-budget and better quality service on your own?

Everyone wants to save money, time, and inconvenience, while having their lower cheeks puckered upon. Good luck with that, and quit with your whining, or get your wallet open.
