American Home Shield - Contractors will say lack of maintenance so hey can sell you their services
I've had several dealings with this company. None of them were ever good. One time the contractor faked sending in pictures of the problem to AHS. I was denied of course, so then the contractor tried like *** to sell me his services. AHS denied ever receiving the...

The contractors American home shield works with are at best incompetent. We have been through three contractors trying to get our AC repaired. The first contractor came out and removed parts to try and order them, left and I never heard back from them. The second one...

You are the “hot potato” customer, who gets passed around from contractor to contractor, because they have not found a basis for denial of your claim, and AHS forces their contractor to Provide the goods and services (even new equipment) for the price of the service call fee. The contractors, by working for AHS, are gambling that they can get the claims that don’t require much work or many parts.

Yours, however, is an expensive unfixable mess. AHS holds their contractors to a $200 average per ticket cost, which will include parts, labor, new unit, and the customer’s service fee. Your claim is a hot potato which will continue to get transferred until you give up or AHS FORCES the least favorable company trying to work for them to buy you a new whatever and install it for free, in order to remain a vendor for AHS. Since all their reputations are shot to pieces in the community, thanks to working for AHS and home warranty companies, in order to keep getting work from AHS, the miserable contractor who gets stuck with your claim will give you a *** job.

Is that what you really want? You customers who perpetuate this market deserve what you get.

You’re better off buying a couple of window units. Those things really work!

I’ve lived with window units and space heaters for several years. There is no shame in using them. It is, however, a shame to pay good money to a home warranty instead of hiring a licensed contractor yourself.

Then you will get to decide yourself when the system needs replacing and you will have control over the situation. Plan B: window units and save up your money to buy a system

AHS only pays the contractor your service fee and they expect the contractor to get paid the rest by the customer for any loopholes. The service fee doesn’t cut it as far as payment to the contractor goes.

If no items that aren’t covered can be found by the contractor, then he has to perform the work for free, or find a loophole that will get then entire claim denied.

It’s all about money, or lack thereof. So yes, there are lackeys, lack of payment gets plenty of that.

We came into our contract with American Home Shield with the purchase of our home in 2016. It was added as a stipulation due to the age of the AC on the property and the age of the property itself. For the first year we didn’t end up having to use the service. So we...

The AHS preferred contractors MUST look at everything from a standpoint of denial, because it is in the best interest of the contractor to do so. AHS sets a target average cost per call, which is so low that no work can be performed, and if the contractor’s average costs per call comes in above that ridiculous amount, they will get no more calls from AHS.

Imagine if you owned a bunch of properties or a huge complex of apartments, and you had to choose which HVAC person to send all the service calls to. You wouldn’t choose the guy who comes quickly, even on weekends, nights and holidays, yet charges a typical $500 average per pop. Also, you would definitely not use him if he recommended that each system needs replacing, because they’re old or worn out. If he did, you’d be looking at $5,000 per service call.

You can’t honestly say that you would hire him for your rentals and that you’d be ok with such expenditures. If you were so inclined to spend money like that, of course you’d get great service and response time. Instead, AHS chooses the companies who do not have a great clientele of their own, and they overtake their business with high demand and low pay. If a claim is “covered” by AHS, it is actually the repairman who is paying for it, not AHS.

If the repairman charges AHS even enough to break even, he will be removed from the AHS vendor list. For that reason, EVERY claim is examined and diagnosed from the beginning as a possible denial. The contractor is protecting his own interests, that’s why you can’t get them to recommend replacement. It’s also the reason that when a repair is authorized, it takes FOREVER to get it completed.

The authorization means that the contractor is going to lose money.

All home warranties operate like this. You would too, if you were in their shoes.

Only very good at collecting monthly premiums and bad on honoring claims. They send you unprofessional, incompetent and worst reviewed contractors so they pay them much lesser fees

Oh it is much worse than AHS merely paying “lesser fees”. That makes it sound like they actually PAY fees.

The reality is that their contractors are only trying to collect your service fee deductible and provide NOTHING, or as little as possible, in exchange for becoming one of their top preferred contractors. The “preferred” contractors are not “preferred” by the customers, but rather AHS, because of the knack they have for not charging AHS anything at all. The contractors go out and make a diagnostic visit for the $100 service fee, and then don’t bill AHS any more, so that they can capture all the calls in the area that AHS has. It’s such a scam!!!!

Not a good value for what you pay in premiums.

The few few times you might come out ahead with no hassle on small stuff are just not worth the trouble on the big stuff. The more expensive the problem, the greater the hassle.

American Home Shield in District 1, Tennessee - Swamp Cooler Repair

1.1
Details
Requested service for older swamp cooler repair. Some fly by night company came out and looked at it and stated it was unrepairable. I finally found the time and repaired it myself. Spent hours on hold with AMS. Rep offered no help, stated they would put a notation in the vendor profile. Never offered to find alternative. Not really sure what the service offers. I could fix most problems in the time I spend on hold with this *** company. The name of the company should be, just send us money monthly for nothing.

The home warranty company’s service provider only gets paid the service fee to handle your claim—then the service provider, NOT AHS, has to pay for parts and labor and return to fix it. So it is actually the service provider who insured your fridge.

AHS only acts as the middle man, working both of you over, and collecting all the monthly proceeds. As you know, parts are expensive, and the service fee won’t cover it. Therefore, the repair company is in no hurry to pay for this. They won’t be reimbursed, but they WILL get more work orders from AHS for not charging them to do their work.

The service provider HOPES for more of the claims to be denied than repaired. Apparently, yours was not denied, so he just has to suck it up and buy your parts and fix yours, at his own expense. If he charges AHS even what the parts cost him, on a regular basis, he will be fired for excessive costs. They expect their vendors to absorb the costs that AHS SHOULD have to pay!how does that make you feel?

If you are like most of their customers, you don’t care, as long as somebody gives you what you are entitled to. This sense of entitlement of the AHS customers is nauseating to the vendors, because it is the vendors who are losing money, while AHS gets rich. The vendors have to keep going, because doing AHS’ dirty work leaves them with a ruined reputation in the community, and the only way to remain in business is to carry on until it runs out. Then they’ll get a new contractor.

The only way to make this insanity atop is for consumers to atop buying their bs plans. Quit trying to get something for nothing.

As you said, “We have been customers of AHS for many years and have used them for a few minor repair issues, (things that I could have repaired myself had I the time), paying $75.00 for each call.” This is what they HOPE will happen!!!! You end up giving them thousands of dollars over the years, and they give you a few hundred.

It isn’t worth the hassle to use a home warranty!!!! The recommendation of their service provider is sound: definitely do not try to replace the faulty components in your old system. Do NOT spend $1000 on freon! Have the entire system replaced, the refrigerant lines flushed, and get estimates from smaller licensed companies to replace with new equipment.

Cancel AHS and find your own small local businesses that are TRADE licensed SPECIFICALLY in their trade, not “general contractors” or handymen, or a guy who works for a guy who owns a business.

The job won’t be licensed, permitted, inspected or most importantly “insured” for a proper installation. As you’ve found, a home warranty is only good for the home warranty company!
