I've had very bad experiences w/call centers. I do not wish to speak w/someone in Asia, Mexico or any other country. Extreme difficulty and long wait times being escalated to someone I could speak with, problems with billing procedures and wait time in getting work completed. My A/C situation was to be escalated and it was not.

American Home Shield - A/C replacement unit no cover

A unit was purchased 2 or 3 yrs ago. Service was requested and was told unit was installed incorrectly but AHS said unit was not under warranty. To correct this installation it would cost me $1480. I am no longer a member.

That complaint is too long to read in its entirety. The moral of the story is valid however : don't waste your money on these baloney 'warranty' companies. You will also waste time and effort in addition to incurring lots of frustration and the loss of liberty to handle your problems your way.

The condenser? That is not a part.

The condenser is the entire outdoor unit on a split AC system. Inside the condenser is the condenser coil, the compressor, and capacitors. Home warranties are meant to patch and repair systems in order to keep them going, for as little money as possible. Like a rental property, homes covered by a home warranty are not going to receive a lot of new equipment because of cost control, which is the whole reason one would buy a home warranty in the first place: they don’t want to spend big money.

Neither does AHS.

HVAC claims must remain below $200 per ticket average or the contractor is fired for letting costs get out of control. So contractors are forced to cut corners, and do things an ordinary HVAC company would not do.

Great example of why home buyers should REJECT any offer of a home warranty!!! The best thing to do when purchasing a home is to skip the home inspector and hire licensed trades people to perform a service call/inspection of any equipment, plumbing, roofing, foundation, electrical. Yes, it will take some coordination to schedule multiple technicians from different specialties, but it will be worth it to know what’s really wrong before you buy a house, instead of reliance on a home warranty to fix it after the purchase.

What you have stated is all correct, for the most part. Some systems have slight freon leakage, and need to be topped off every 1-3 years.

As long as the amount of refrigerant is not more than a few pounds, it’s not a huge deal, like adding a quart of oil to a car. You are absolutely correct that AHS punishes their contractors who charge AHS above $200 average on each service call.

They simply won’t stand for being charged more. The contractors hands are tied—they’d love to sell new systems.

You knew you needed a $7,000 new system, but decided to get a policy instead. Or, you bought a house knowing it needs a new system.

If so, the sellers definitely knew the system needs replacing. A home warranty is never going to perform miracles. You opted to go the cheap route, and this is it.

Cancel the policy and hire your own company, and get ready to buy a new system. That’s the right way to handle it.

Take the buyout check and go with a new system replacement elsewhere on your own. You don’t want any system or repairs AHs would pay for.

You will wait forever because the contractors are the ones that actually have to eat the cost of your claim, NOT AHS. The contractors will get cut off for charging AHS above the targeted $200 average per ticket claim on HVAC calls, so they do it for free and even have to buy the new equipment. This is to keep Ahs from firing them for the average ticket cost going above $200. You will be gouged elsewhere on the non-covered charges.

That’s how the contractor controls his loss. He works on high volume and won’t have time to spend replacing your system until fall. Why would you want to mess with this?

Take your buyout and go buy what you really need and cancel your plan. All warranties are bs
